Southend left it late, and did it with 10-men, but they managed to secure a point at Accrington on Saturday afternoon.

It was fairly easy to see why Accrington had only one once in thirteen on the evidence of the first half, which saw the sides go in level.

Approaching the hour James Gray (58) fired Stanley into the lead, with their chances of victory increasing moments later when Ryan Cresswell saw red for Southend. The defender was sent off for violent conduct after a clash with the goalscorer.

Stanley pushed for a second but couldn’t manage this with Kevan Hurst’s (82) 20-yarder securing Southend a 1-1 draw late on.
