Manager James Beattie has said that this week the trialists will play more of a role in our friendly tonight against Altrincham and a behind closed doors game we have arranged against Birmingham City.
Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the game with a number of new faces still with us, since as former Everton goalkeeper Iain Turner, Norwich midfielder Michael Clunan, Rochdale youngster Connor Martin and Aussie left back Charlie Beverly, Beattie said now was the time he’d really look at them in extended action so he could make his mind up.
‘We’ve got two games this week, against Altrincham and behind closed doors at Birmingham on Wednesday. That’s a good opportunity for me to get a proper look at the lads who have been training with us. They’ve only played bit parts in the games so far but that’s because I want to get the minutes into our lads’ legs and make sure that we’re fully prepared.’
With the gaffer obviously having had a good look at them in training and how they have fitted in wit the group, as well as any minutes they have got so far, he knows it’s now decision time on those lads with us, as others have already left as they weren’t quite what he was after.
One player who came in for the Burnley game was 22 year old Lee Wort, and he has been somebody the gaffer has been watching for a while as he scored over 50 times for non league Sholing FC as they won the FA Vase last campaign, and in his brief time with us so far, the gaffer has been pretty impressed.
‘I’ve monitored Lee’s progress for a couple of seasons and my friends in Southampton swear by him. I believe that everyone deserves an opportunity and this is Lee’s.’
