FORMER Accrington Stanley captain Peter Cavanagh will join Blue Square North side Fleetwood Town on a contract until the end of the season when his football ban comes to an end next week.

The former Liverpool trainee was shamed and banned from all footballing activities for eight months when he was found guilty by the Football Association for betting offences whilst playing for Accrington.

The 28-year-old was said to have placed bets on Accrington Stanley to lose a home fixture to Bury at the end of 2008, a game which the Reds crashed to a 2-0 defeat in, with Cavanagh giving away a penalty.

The Football League transfer window is now shut, restricting Cav’s options, meaning a move into non league football was his only bet, no pun intended.
