FORMER Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Ashley Timms has admitted blackmailing a top Premier League footballer over images of a sexual nature and faces a spell in prison.

Timms, 22, started his career as a youth goalkeeper for Manchester City, but had unsucessful trial spells with Norwich City, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham, Oldham and Macclesfield.

The Manchester born stopper played a number of games for Accrington’s Reserve team following his release from City, starting in the match against Guiseley at Great Harwood.

He admitted blackmailing the unnamed player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, between March and April this year.

Judge Andrew Gilbart QC has told of how prison is inevitable for Timms, who is without a club following his release from Cambridge City at the end of the season.

He had previously pleaded not guilty to demanding £15,000 from the player.
