Connor Martin has today penned a short term deal with Accrington Stanley as he looks to play his way into manager James Beattie’s first team plans.
The 18 year old midfielder was skipper of Rochdale’s youth team last season and he has been with us on trial over the summer.
Having now penned his deal, I presume a half season one, he told the Official Site that he knows this is an opportunity he has to grab with both hands so he makes an impact and earns himself a longer deal with us.
‘I’m really pleased to sign for Accrington Stanley, I can’t wait for the season to start now. I have been here three or four weeks and they are a great set of lads who I can learn a lot off. They have helped me settle in and I have some great players to compete with.’
Martin goes on to say that obviously having somebody like Beattie as our manager, given the level he played at in the game, is a positive and he can obviously lean a lot on his experience and develop further as well, but with players like Joyce, Hunt and Windass being in the team, he knows he can really make the most of this now.
‘I can play in midfield, on the wing or in the hole – wherever the gaffer wants me to be to be honest!’
He also knows if he’s too impress further having impressed enough to be given a shot on a short term deal, he needs to show that he can make the step up from youth team football to League 2 standard and he knows it’s going to be a ‘massive leap’ for him, and strength elements alone he knows he needs to bulk up a touch but he’s confident he can get there and prove himself now.
The gaffer himself said of the deal.
‘This is all about Connor’s development and gives him a chance to continue impressing us in training and on a match day. He’s a good prospect and this is a chance for him to continue improving.’
