Accrington Stanley have announced that defender Lee Naylor has now left the club after both parties agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent.

The 33 year old left back joined the club on a short term deal back in November and in his time with us he went on to make 14 appearances.

Speaking to the Official Site to explain the decision to fans, manager James Beattie explained that over the past weeks he’d had a few long chats with Naylor and it was very clear that the travelling was getting to him more and more as time went on – no more so than over the festive period and given that he has had interest from higher league clubs, that are also closer to his home, it was decided to mutually terminate his short term deal to allow him to immediately chase up those options.

‘We’re sad to lose Lee with him being an experienced pro but we had a chat and were honest with each other. It’s disappointing to lose a player of his quality but I understand totally where he’s coming from.’

Beattie goes on to say that his performances for us so far this campaign have underlined the ability that he has, and it was obvious that there were always going to be teams watching him so it was about making the most of it in the short term, knowing it wouldn’t last.

‘I think it was good for both parties to get Lee playing football again and maybe help him fall back in love with the game. It was great for us to have his quality for the kind of money that he shouldn’t be on.’

With his departure now sorted, the gaffer said it was the perfect chance for the likes of Michael Liddle and Laurence Wilson to now step up to the plate and prove their worth as we move forward this season as he knows that when Lee came to the club there must have been disappointment for them, and quite frankly he hopes they were disappointed.

‘They’ve always got behind him and appreciated his quality and now it’s an opportunity for them to stake a claim.’

Hopefully working alongside him both players would’ve also learnt a fair bit that will help bring them on further in their own development as well.
