ACCRINGTON Stanley’s Reserve string lost their first game of the season as they crashed to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Championship side Preston North End.

Accrington had started the Reserve campaign with a bang as Bobby Grant smashed Stanley to a 1-0 opening day win over Chester City at the Fraser Eagle Stadium.

A strong Preston North End side soon took the lead through Carl Hawley who joined Paul Simpson’s stuttering Lily Whites in the summer on a free transfer from Carlisle.

Leighton McGivern got Stanley back level in the game before ex-Liverpool striker Neil Mellor slotted the ball past Ian Dunbavin in the Stanley goal.

McGivern again put Stanley back on level terms as he grabbed his second of the game and his second of the Reserve campaign. But it wasn’t to be for Stanley and Simon Whaley won the game for Preston.

Next up for the Reserves is Rochdale at The Fraser Eagle Stadium on Wednesday 12th September. The game has a kick off time of 7:00pm.
