Following on from our recent contract extensions, long serving centre back Dean Winnard has also committed the next two years of his career to Accrington Stanley.
Pen was put to paper earlier today, and the 24 year old will now remain with us until the summer of 2016, having first joined the club back in 2009.
Speaking to the Official Site after signing the deal that will now make him one of our longest serving players at the club, he explained.
‘I can’t wait to get started. It all seems like I’ve been off forever now and I can’t wait to return. Any deal to be staying in the Football League is a great deal. There are so many great players out there who can’t even get into the league, so it’s an honour to still be playing in it.’
Winnard goes on to say that it’s been a long road for him at the club, and he’s certainly had his ups and downs during his many years with us, but he’s also had some great experiences that he could’ve only experienced at a place like Stanley, and for him that’s a very good thing indeed.
With four players who were out of contract now signed up, manager James Beattie said.
‘We’re thrilled that Dean’s extended his contract. He was a pivotal member of our squad last year and his form throughout the season was tremendous. I’m delighted that he’s signed up for two years.’
Beattie goes on to say that from the first moment they started talking about a new deal, Winnard’s desire to commit was evident, and obviously being a new dad contributed to that because he obviously wants some stability in life now that he’s got a young family. Equally having that commitment he knows will be the only motivation Winnard needs to develop and improve further so he can make the most of his career and his time with us.
‘If he can kick on again this year, he can be excellent. He’s already one of the most consistent players we’ve got and deserves this new deal. He couldn’t wait to sign which was music to my ears. He said he wouldn’t want to sign anywhere else and we’re so pleased to keep him on board.’
